National University of Singapore, Saturday, January 10, 2015 – Kent Ridge Hall emerged as the women’s Touch Rugby champions in the National University of Singapore Inter-Hall Games (IHG). The were unbeaten in all four games, with the highlight being their 2–1 win over defending champions, Eusoff Hall.
Eusoff Hall finished second while King Edward VII Hall were third.
The IHG is a yearly event in NUS, where the six different halls come together to compete against each other in sports. The Touch Rugby tournament is played in a day with a round-robin format. One game consists of two halves of 10 minutes each with a 5-minute halftime break.
Eusoff Hall (EH) beat Raffles Hall (RH) 4–0 to clinch their first win of the carnival. Eusoff’s Priscilla Lim (#10) was a standout, making several good runs during the first half and made touches defensively to deny her opponents from advancing forward. The Eusoff girls staged an impressive offensive game by connecting well on runs, earning their opening victory.
On the other field, Kent Ridge Hall (KR) narrowly beat King Edward VII Hall (KE) 3–2 for their first win of the day.
Just before break time, Kent Ridge and Eusoff were leading the other halls with identical 2–0 win-loss records. Temasek Hall, on the other hand, trailed with draws against Raffles and Sheares.
Eusoff’s captain, Sylvia Lim (#7), commented, “I think all my players are finally playing together as a team today. Everyone is helping one another on the field.”
When asked how the team is going to prepare for their strongest opponents in the carnival, Sylvia said, “I think we have to keep communicating, continue playing our best, and the rest will come in.”
The highlight of the tournament was the game between Eusoff and Kent Ridge. Going into the game, both halls had zero losses and were looking at another victory to keep their winning streak. They were evenly-matched but Kent Ridge scored the winning try right before the end to win 2–1 and hand Eusoff their first defeat.
Kent Ridge’s captain, Alicia Fong (#2), said, “I think we really improved a lot. After two games or so, we caught up with the momentum.”
When asked about how she felt about beating defending champions Eusoff, Alicia said, “We have really been working hard to beat everyone, especially Eusoff. They are a very strong team so I’m really happy because we trained very hard for this.”
Kent Ridge went on to beat Raffles 3–0 to secure their IHG championship title.
In their final game, Eusoff were up against Temasek to fight for the second position. Despite the painful loss earlier on to Kent Ridge, Eusoff were composed and stayed focused on the field to hand Temasek a convincing 5–0 defeat to secure the runners-up position.
King Edward VII came in third with two wins, one draw, and two losses.
