Montfort Secondary School, Thursday, January 29, 2015 — Montfort Secondary survived a last-inning scare to defeat Greendale Secondary 8–7 for their first win of the National B Division Softball Championship season.
Despite having runners in scoring position with just one out, Montfort could not get any runs and neither did Greendale in the first inning.
Montfort came back stronger in the second inning with a boost in their offence, scoring three runs in a row before leaving two runners stranded on base. Greendale responded with a run of their own to go into the third inning with a just a two-run deficit.
Scoring three runs to increase their lead, Montfort set the pace for the game in the third inning with a 6–1 lead. Greendale started to catch up, scoring two to close the gap to three runs.
Montfort managed to score two runs in the fourth to make it 8–3, which proved to be the deciding runs of the game, before switching to defence. Montfort’s defence struggled as Greendale managed to find themselves offensively in the bottom of the fourth and started to make a comeback.
Scoring run after run, Greendale looked to turn the game around with the bases loaded and just a one-run deficit. However, they were stopped in their tracks when Leow Feng Ying (Montfort #7) managed to strike out the final batter in a full count situation to end the game.
“I think my pitching today was a little inaccurate, but I know that I’ve got my fielders behind me so I didn’t have anything to worry about. I’m really grateful to have a team like this behind me for this season,” said Feng Ying.
Montfort captain, Aaron Salim (#6) added, “Today’s game was one of the most exciting games that I’ve played. Our opponents were really strong but I’m glad that our defence managed to prevail in the last inning.”
Greendale captain, Jacus Heng (#56) said, “We only performed well in the last inning as it was our only chance at winning this game.”
Montfort will face Bukit View Secondary on Monday while Greendale will face off against Anglo-Chinese School (Independent) in a do-or-die game.
