Jurong West Sports Hall, Monday, February 2, 2015 –– Bukit Panjang Govt. High School (BPGHS) defeated NUS High 51–3 in the first round of the West Zone B Division Netball Championship.
The win improved Bukit Panjang’s win-loss record to 2–0. The fourth-seeded team defeated Regent 53–6 in their earlier match.
Bukit Panjang dominated from the start, playing their game with quick passes to move from one end of the court to another. Offensively, they were unstoppable and had no trouble finding their Goal Attack, Shirley Ng, who consistently added points with her good finishing. She contributed eight out of the 13 goals scored in that quarter.
After a fruitless first quarter filled with interceptions, NUS High were able to put together a solid possession to find Qian Yu (GA) in the second quarter to score the first goal. Bukit Panjang scored 15 points that quarter to lead the game 28–1 by half time.
Early into the third quarter, NUS High were awarded possession of the ball after a contact foul was made on their Wing Attack. The ball was then passed to the Goal Shooter who then scored the second point for NUS High (2–31).
Bukit Panjang’s Goal Shooter, Yun Jin, kicked off the final quarter with nine consecutive points to bring their lead to 46–3. She shook off her defenders to reach open spaces and converted efficiently in the goal circle. A 14–0 final quarter wrapped up the win for Bukit Panjang.
Worthy of mention was the NUS High Goal Keeper, Ragari, who displayed commendable efforts in her attempts to challenge every lob, pass and shot from the BPGHS shooters who were bigger and taller than her.
Bukit Panjang’s captain, Celine Chua, said, “I think we did okay for today’s match, whereas NUS High put up a good fight. They stepped up in the third quarter and didn’t give up.”
Celine also praised her teammate, Xin Ying, who played GA in the last two quarters. She said, “Xin Ying performed better today than how she usually does in trainings. She was very composed as a shooter on court.”
Bukit Panjang will play Unity in their next match at 3.p.m on Friday, February 6, while NUS High will face Yuan Ching Sec at 5.p.m. on Friday on the same day. Both games will take place at River Valley High School.
