Singapore Basketball Centre, Friday, January 30, 2015 – Northland Secondary School defeated Naval Base Secondary School 46–22 for their only win in the first round of the North Zone B Division Boys’ Basketball Championship.
Northland lost their final game of Round 1 28–38 to Yio Chu Kang to finish fourth in the group. Naval Base lost their final game of Round 1 22–63 to Christ Church Secondary to finish winless with a 0–4 record.
In the game against Naval Base, Darren Koay (NSS #7) led all scorers with 24 points, while (NBS #7) had 8 points for his team.
In the first quarter, the game was played at a fast pace. (NBS #7) had two 3-pointers which led his team during the first quarter. Naval Base had multiple shooting chances as they managed to break though Northland’s defense to lead 15–10 at the end of the first quarter.
Northland managed to narrow the score with their fast offense in the second quarter. Ge Jian (NSS #12) facilitated the team with lay-ups and shooting opportunities with his fast dribbling on offense but Naval Base put on a tough fight and managed to take a 24–19 lead at half time.
Into the third quarter, Enzio Choo (NSS #9) tied the game at 25–25 with a lay-up. The game was close with both teams taking turns to grab lead in the third quarter. Both teams were tied at 33–33 heading into the fourth quarter.
Swee Joo (NSS #11) broke the tie less than a minute into the fourth but a tough fight saw each team taking turns to lead. With less than 30 seconds to the end of the game, Enzio (NSS #9) took a shot to seal a 41–39 victory.
Northland’s top scorer and captain, Darren Koay (#7) said, “I felt that this was a difficult game. But I felt that our hard work had paid off as we didn’t start off well but managed to catch up after the third quarter. I feel that the juniors have a lot to improve on.”
