National University of Singapore, Friday, February 6, 2015— Temasek Hall (TH) triumphed 7–5 over Kent Ridge Hall (KR) to secure the title for the fourth year running in the National University of Singapore (NUS) Inter-Hall Games Floorball Championship.
The match started off promisingly with both teams being very eager to attack. KR quickened the play by playing long balls forward to their attackers.
In contrast, TH relied more on short passes to bring the ball forward. They were rewarded for this with their first goal scored within the first eight minutes. Muhammad Afi Syafiq (#31) diverted defenders away to allow Lim Yukean (#9) a clear shot for the opening goal.
KR’s bid for an equalizer were repeatedly foiled by TH goalkeeper Teh Bing Yu (#54) as he made multiple brilliant saves. In addition, skilful play by TH captain Jonathan Heng (#13) gave TH the upper hand.
With 8 minutes left on the clock, Muhammad Afi Syafiq (#31) showcased his abilities once more to extend TH’s lead. This goal was scored off a long pass from TH goalkeeper Teh Bing Yu (#54).
However, KR’s bid for a goal was eventually successful when Aton Ng (#3) skilfully dribbled the ball round the goalpost and flicked in their first goal.
This was closely followed by a near-range equalising goal from teammate Jared Goh (#10) with just 11 seconds left in the first period.
Seemingly discouraged by their loss of the lead, the quality of TH’s passes appeared to deteriorate in the second period. Taking advantage of this, Marcus Tan (KR #17) gave KR their first lead at 3–2 when TH goalkeeper Teh Bing Yu (#54) was unable to make a save.
However, Muhammad Afi Syafiq (TH #31) quickly found an equalizer with a quick shot in at close range.
TH’s good fortunes did not last as Lim Yukean (#9) was given a two-minute suspension for dangerous play with just five minutes remaining in the second period. Despite being one man down, TH were able to hold off their opponents as their goalkeeper Teh Bing Yu (#54) once again made multiple good saves.
Within the first minute of the third period, TH captain Jonathan Heng (#13) turned and shot under pressure for TH to regain the lead at 4–3.
However, a back pass from a TH defender to their goalkeeper resulted in an easy goal for Koh Ye Shen (KR #99) to tie it up at 4–4. This tie was later broken by a shot in from Foo Chi Hua Augestine (TH #28) from a corner in the last four minutes.
Despite TH’s best efforts to hold on to the 5–4 lead, Koh Ye Shen (#99) scored yet another goal to even up the score, forcing the game to go into penalties.
TH captain Jonathan Heng (#13) scored their first shot and Muhammad Afi Syafiq (#31) scored their fourth. In a brilliant display of skill, TH goalkeeper Teh Bing Yu (#54) saved all four shots from KR to give TH their hard earned win.
When asked about his team’s performance, TH captain Jonathan Heng stated that he was very proud his team. He felt that his team displayed mental strength and took the pressure very well. In addition, he commended Muhammad Afi Syafiq (#31) for his immense contributions.
