Singapore Basketball Centre, Friday, January 6, 2015 — Catholic High (CHS) hung on to claim a 41–37 victory against Yishun Secondary (YSS) in their first second round game of the North Zone B Division Basketball Championship.
Catholic High’s captain, Christian Darryl Soh (CHS #9), anchored the team with a game-high 13 points, which included a three-pointer. Nay Myo Naing (YSS #9) of Yishun scored a team-high of 11 points.
The first three minutes of the first quarter saw Catholic High quickly pulling away from Yishun due to their strong play. While Yishun gradually stepped up on their offense and defense, Catholic High still held a 12–7 lead at the end of the first quarter.
In the first half of the second quarter, scoring was at a standstill as neither team were able to get past each other’s strong defense. By half-time, Yishun were still trailing Catholic High by five points (13–18).
However, the turning point for Yishun came in the third quarter. A three-pointer from Dion Low (YSS #5) began closing the gap. With teamwork, Yishun were able to pass the ball around swiftly with only a few turnovers. As Catholic High had difficulties getting through the tight Yishun defense, this allowed Yishun to steal the lead at 25–23 at the end of the third quarter.
Tension was building up in the last quarter as both teams began to fight for the ball. This saw Yishun commit many fouls, giving away several free throws to Catholic High. Despite the three-pointer made by Chong Zhao Hui (YSS #13), Yishun were unable to hold onto the lead as they started to lose composure.
Catholic High were thus able to easily drive to the basket and attack the rim. The tables were turned once again, as Catholic High took advantage of the situation, hanging on until the end to win the game by a slim four-point margin (41–37).
Yishun captain, Levin Yeo (#14), said, “We panicked in the fourth quarter and hence fouled a lot. Our defense was lacking then and we should have improved on it.”
Catholic High will next play Yio Chu Kang Secondary at 2.20 p.m. on Monday, February 9, while Yishun will face Edgefield Secondary at 3.30 p.m. on Monday, February 9. Both games will take place at the Singapore Basketball Centre.
