Dunman Secondary School, Tuesday, February 10, 2015 — Tanjong Katong Girls’ School (TKGS) defeated Temasek Secondary 37–18 in the preliminary round of the East Zone B Division Netball Championship.

The win gives TKGS a 5-0 win-loss record. The third-seeded team previously defeated Tampines, Anglican High, Loyang, and Springfield Secondary 47–14, 36–12, 31–24 and 28–8 respectively. A final group win over Bedok South Sec will ensure they proceed to second round as champions of Group C.

TKGS dominated from the start, playing their game with quick passes to move from one end of the court to the other. They faced little difficulty in feeding to their Goal Shooter, Stephanie Decotta, who consistently added points onto the scoreboard with her good finishing. She contributed to nine out of the 12 goals scored in the first quarter. TKGS pulled ahead to lead 12–6 by the end of the first time-out.

TKGS continued to limit Temasek’s scoring with their diligent defence, intercepting passes that were intended to reach the goal circle. Temasek were more coordinated towards the end of the first half to play a much better game, scoring three more points to trail 9–22.

Temasek entered the second half with a tightened defence, closing down TKGS players and severely restricting their chances to score. The successful turnovers made by the Temasek defenders helped them outscore TKGS 8–6 in the third quarter.

Keen to narrow the score gap, Temasek continued to give their opponents a strong fight and tried their best to upset TKGS’ flow and composure. However, a 7–3 final quarter wrapped up the 37–18 win for TKGS.

TKGS’ Captain, Vanessa Yeo, said, “We played better today as compared to our previous games. We knew that we had to step up our game because we will be going into the second round in a few weeks. Temasek put up a tough fight today and they performed well. ”

Temasek’s Captain, Nur Izrirah, said: “We put up a good game today. We were not penalised as often for our contacts and obstructions as compared to our previous few games.”

Tears welled up Izrirah’s eyes as she talked about her last game of the season representing Temasek. She said, “I’m very proud of my team for coming so far and they are the best teammates I can ever ask for.”
