Jurong West Sports Hall, Monday, February 16, 2014 — Bukit Panjang Govt. High (BPGHS) defeated Hua Yi Secondary (HYS) 73–4 in their final group game of the West Zone B Division Netball Championship.
Bukit Panjang dominated in their earlier games against NUS High, Unity, Chua Chu Kang, Yuan Ching and Regent with scores of 51–3, 45–4, 35–10, 53–6 respectively. The fourth-seeded team topped their group with this win and will continue on to the second round of the zonal championship along with Yuan Ching, who finished as runners up of Group D.
Bukit Panjang went on an 18–0 scoring run in the first quarter, while Hua Yi struggled with their passes which allowed their opponents to make easy interceptions. The Bukit Panjang shooters were able to evade the Hua Yi defenders, often finding themselves with acres of space in the goal circle. They managed to successfully pot their shots without much difficulty to build up a strong first half lead.
Early into the second quarter, the Hua Yi players were able to put together a solid possession to find their shooters in the goal circle. Hua Yi’s GS, Yik Yaing, managed to score the first goal for her team.
Bukit Panjang continued to dominate with a succession of turnovers, displaying relentless pressure on their mid-court defence. Bukit Panjang’s GS was dominant offensively with her accuracy at the net, contributing to 17 out of 21 goals scored in this quarter. BPGHS went on a 21–1 scoring run to pull away 39–1 going into the halftime break.
In the third quarter, Hua Yi had a more composed game play as they patiently worked the ball down to their shooters. Yashidah, Hua Yi’s GA, scored the second goal for her team as she managed to get past her defenders to receive the ball from her midfielders. She had played a pivotal role for Hua Yi with good runs in the shooting circle and assisting her team’s offence.
On the other hand, Bukit Panjang’s good team chemistry coupled with near flawless shots outscored Hua Yi 17–2, allowing them to extend their lead to 56–3.
Bukit Panjang’s Goal Shooter and Goal Attack continued to work well on offence, as their quick rotation and high shooting accuracy helped to extend the lead in the final quarter. Refusing to let their smaller statures be a disadvantage, Hua Yi tried their hardest to defend against their opponents. Despite their valiant efforts, they could not overhaul the deficit. A 17–1 final quarter wrapped up the 73–4 win for Bukit Panjang.
Worthy of mention was the Hua Yi’s Goalkeeper, Liyana, who displayed commendable efforts in her attempts to challenge every lob from the BPGHS shooters who were bigger and taller than her. She managed to tap a few lobs towards the end of the quarter and create several turnovers for her team.
Bukit Panjang’s captain, Celine Chua, said, “We might have won the match but I felt that we could have played better and be more consistent throughout this season. We definitely need to step up our game during the second round.”
Commenting on her opponents’ play, she said, “Hua Yi displayed great sportsmanship and put up a good game. They did not give up and they looked like a very bonded team. Their teacher-in-charge was very supportive of them too! He kept encouraging and cheering the Hua Yi players by the sidelines,” she added.
Hua Yi’s captain, Pei Rong said, “We didn’t play very well today as we rushed our attacks. However, we have definitely improved this season as compared to last year.”
Pei Rong, who will be graduating from Hua Yi netball this year, expressed her hopes for her next batch of juniors who will be stepping up. “I hope they will continue to bring pride to Hua Yi and play their best in every game.”
