Republic Polytechnic Sports Complex, Friday, February 27, 2015 — Singapore Sports School (SSP) gained their eighth consecutive win after beating Bowen Secondary (BW) 37–16 in round two of the North Zone B Division Netball Championship.

Singapore Sports School have an 8–0 win-loss record from games played against Punggol Secondary (48–5), CHIJ St. Nicholas Girls’ (35–19), Northland Secondary (61–4), Woodlands Secondary (82–4), Anderson Secondary (68–3), North Vista Secondary (50–13) and Sengkang Secondary.

On the other hand, Bowen, before entering round two, held a 5–2 win-loss record, with wins against Evergreen Secondary (40–10), Serangoon Secondary (31–20), Compassvale Secondary (43–9), Naval Base Secondary (48–9) and Riverside Secondary (31–18).

Both teams were competitive and aggressive as the game started off at a fast pace. Bowen began to make several shots and Sports School followed suit soon after. While Sports School’s display of teamwork was exceptional, some inaccurate passing allowed Bowen to steal the ball. However, Sports School managed to hold a one-point (8–7) lead at the end of the first quarter.

Sports School stepped up their game in the second quarter as their passing became noticeably better. While their passes covered much ground, their players were also swift to receive the ball. The nimble offence from Sports School made it difficult for Bowen to intercept. Also, Sports School’s Goal Keeper displayed exemplary defence when she executed several defensive rebounds.

On the other hand, Bowen’s players were not as fast and had less control of the ball. Hence, Sports School extended their lead to 15–8 at the end of the second quarter.

The third quarter saw Sports School show good team play, especially between their Wing Attack, Goal Shooter and Goal Attack. This gave them many chances to convert at the net, while Bowen struggled to keep up. The lead widened to 26–12 at the end of the quarter.

Despite the increasing deficit, Bowen continued to fight hard in the final quarter, especially their Goal Attack, who tried hard to win as many rebounds. However, Sports School were in the class of their own and together with their accurate shooting, managed to win the game 37–16.

Sports School’s captain, Tan Zay Hua, said, “We started off badly but towards the end we gained momentum. Our focus was what led us to win the game despite lacking it at the beginning.”

“Our opponents played very well. We were shocked at how fast they were,” she added.

Bowen will next take on Sengkang Secondary at 3.00 p.m., while Singapore Sports School will face CHIJ St. Joseph’s Convent at 4.00 p.m. Both games will take place at Republic Polytechic Sports Complex on Monday, March 2.
