Clementi Sports Hall, Friday, March 27, 2015 — North Vista Secondary led throughout the game to clinch a 66–50 win over Jurong West Secondary in the first round of the National B Division Basketball Championship.
Christian Pepito (#4) and Sim Zhen (#13) led North Vista with 20 points and 14 points respectively.
North Vista played a very fast paced game, relying heavily on fast breaks and three-pointers from Christian to score. Good coordination as well as accurate passing allowed them to navigate easily through Jurong West’s defence.
In contrast, Jurong West struggled to break through North Vista’s defence in the first quarter. Many shots at the basket were inaccurate. Their lack of precision allowed North Vista to pick off rebounds easily for even more shots.
As a result, North Vista were able to establish a comfortable lead from the start, scoring seven points before Jurong West answered.
In the second quarter, Jurong West put up a much stronger defence. This caused North Vista to stumble slightly. Although North Vista had more opportunities to shoot, the tighter man-to-man defence adopted by Jurong West caused their accuracy to suffer.
Yet, Jurong West did not manage to capitalise on North Vista’s momentum break, only picking up the pace in the second half of the match. Joseph Po (Jurong West #14) scored three consecutive baskets in a bid to narrow the score deficit.
However, despite scoring much more points in the second half than in the first, Jurong West were unable to catch up as three-pointer shots from Christian Pepito (#4) repeatedly extended North Vista’s comfortable lead. In the span of two minutes, Christian scored three consecutive three-pointers to propel North Vista to the victory.
“The game was okay, but it wasn’t very good. I feel that we slacked off at the last few minutes of the game but throughout the game, we played good offence. But, we played badly on the defensive side,” said Christian (#4).
“Our opponents played well and gave us a very tough fight. They played quite an aggressive defence,” he added.
