CHIJ Toa Payoh, Tuesday, April 7, 2015 — Singapore School School (SSP) defeated Anderson Secondary (AND) 46–31 for their second straight win in round two of the National B Division Netball Championship.

The North Zone champions had defeated River Valley 31–24 in an earlier match last Thursday. On the other hand, Anderson now fall to a 0–2 win-loss record after going down 29–39 to CHIJ Toa Payoh.

Both teams were competitive and aggressive as the game started off at a fast pace. SSP began to make several shots and Anderson followed suit soon after. Sara Lightfoot (GS) of Sports School was dominant offensively with her accuracy at the net, contributing to 11 out of the 15 goals scored in this quarter.

SSP went on to score four unanswered points towards the end of the quarter to give themselves a strong 15–7 lead.

In the second quarter, Anderson turned in a better performance by showing stronger team chemistry and good shooting. The Anderson players capitalized on Jie Ying’s (GS) height advantage, throwing several lob passes to her for easy baskets. Anderson’s tightened defence also helped reflect a closer contest in the second quarter at 8–7.

Sports School led by nine (23–14) at half time.

The second half saw Sports School continue their dominance by riding on their momentum. SSP’s Goal Attack, Alexandra Stewart, was on point, converting all of her shots within the goal circle. Despite good runs made by the SSP attackers, the Anderson defenders continued to put up a strong fight in an attempt to upset SSP’s flow and composure.

A successful penalty shot converted by Anderson’s GA saw the quarter ending with SSP leading 36–25.

Sports School went on a 6–1 scoring run towards the end of the final quarter which helped them to the eventual 46–31 victory, securing their second win in the quarter-finals.

Tan Zay Hua, captain of Singapore Sports School, said, “We started the game off well with great intensity, and we managed to maintain that level of aggression in the following quarters.”

“Anderson put up a great fight. They had a tall shooter which gave them a strong edge in the game. They definitely played to their strengths and performed well today.” She added.

Sing Fang, captain of Anderson, said, “We tried our best. Though it is not up to our usual standards, but we tried. It’s been a good season for all of us and I’m proud of the team’s progression. We’ve came a really long way.”

“Sports School played well today. They challenged for every ball and wanted the game. Congratulations to them!” she added.

SSP will next take on CHIJ (Toa Payoh) School at 12 p.m., while Anderson will face River Valley High School at 1 p.m. Both games will take place at CHIJ TP on Thursday, April 9.
