Clementi Sports Hall, Monday, April 13, 2015 — Dunman Secondary showed sky-high confidence, tough defense and strong determination as they cruised past Jurong West Secondary 88–40 in the semi-final of the National B Division Basketball Championship.

Dunman went on a quick start with three-pointers coming from Benedict Ong (Dunman #7), Joshua Alas (Dunman #4) and Shukri (Dunman #9) early in the first quarter. Coupled with a sloppy offense and ball handling from Jurong West, Dunman quickly raced to a 10–0 lead.

Joseph Po (Jurong West #14) led the way and fought back with a few strong moves in the paint giving Dunman early foul trouble. Tan Yi Rong (Dunman #12) registered three fouls with just six minutes of play and had to be benched.

However, Joseph Po (Jurong West #14) could not take advantage of the situation as he failed to convert many of his free throws, giving up many precious points. Dunman ended the quarter with a respectable 17–4 lead.

The second quarter belonged to Dunman, as Jurong West could not catch up with their up-tempo offence, giving up many easy fast break points. Dunman did well on all perimeters with a fair combination of fast breaks, meticulous zonal defense with Benedict Ong (Dunman #7) registering three blocks and Chua Sheng Da (Dunman #11), Darren Ng (Dunman #6) and Shukri (Dunman #9) each contributing from three-point range.

Jurong West held on and saw a few pretty plays from Ong Jin Han (#7) and Sean Tiah (#9) with tough lay-ups against multiple defenders.

Tan Yi Rong (Dunman #12), who had foul trouble earlier in the game, checked into the game and redeemed himself. He dominated the paint with strong post moves while clearing the glass at the same time.

The offensive rhythm, teamwork and confidence from Dunman proved too much for Jurong West to handle as Dunman eventually cruised to a 88–40 win.

Shukri (Dunman #9) said, “I feel that we’ve all been putting in a lot of hard work and good fights throughout the season, though we slacked off a little towards the end of the game (against Jurong West).

“This year our ultimate aim is to make it to the finals and redeem the championship title that slipped from our hands two years ago. It will also be a bonus to us. For most of the members in our team, it will be our final year playing for Dunman, so the title means a lot more to us this year and we hope to end off our final year with a memorable victory,” he added.

With the victory, Dunman will advance to the final to face North Vista Secondary. The game will be played on Friday, April 17, 2.30 p.m. at Jurong East Sports Hall.
