Bukit Gombak Stadium, Thursday, April 16, 2015 — Kyler Ong (#413) of Hwa Chong Institution (HCI) won gold when he cleared a height of 3.21 metres in the final of C Division boys’ pole vault event at the 56th National Inter-School Track and Field Championships.
“I was very nervous before the competition because I was scared that I would not be able to cross any height,” said Kyler, who is participating in his first National Inter-School Championships.
The 14-year-old’s result is a new personal best, bettering his previous of 3m.
“I want to thank my coach, David Yeo and his wife, Rachel Yang, my batchmates Jun Yu and Esan for pushing me on through this competition,” he added. “I would also like to thank my Victoria School and Raffles Institution competitors for competing together.”
Kyler’s counterpart, Saciin Esan (#418), emerged as the first runner-up, achieving a height clearance of 3.06m. The third spot was taken up by Koh Ken Tze (#347) of Victoria School with a height of 2.91m, after a count back.
It was a fairly subdued competition with no new records being set. The meet record stands at 3.80m and it was set by HCI alumnus Chan Sheng Yao in 2010.
