Choa Chu Kang Stadium, Wednesday, April 22, 2015 — A hurdler, a sprinter, a pole vaulter and a thrower from the Singapore Sports School were the highlight of the B Division boys’ 4x100m relay final at the 56th National Inter-School Track and Field Championships, as they blazed the track with a record-breaking 42.41 second run.

The relay team was made up of 400m hurdler Muhammad Nur Haqim, sprinter Edwin Tan, pole vaulter Joel Ho and thrower Kang Jun Jie. Their finish is also a fifth consecutive win in the event for the Singapore Sports School.

The previous meet record stood at 42.58s, set in 2010 by Anglo-Chinese School (Independent).

“It was a fantastic run,” said Jun Jie, the team’s anchor runner.

“We didn’t expect the record. We were only aiming to beat Raffles Institution,” chipped in Haqim, the 400m hurdle champion. RI had beaten Singapore Sports School at the SPH Relays.

“I think what was really commendable was that we come from different backgrounds. Achieving this is more than what we can ask for,” Haqim explained.

This is the final year that the 16-year-old boys will be flying their school colours while running alongside each other. The team’s previous personal best was 43.18s and they all agreed that their last National Schools Championships had ended on a good note.

Raffles Institution clocked 43.32s to come in second, while St. Joseph’s Institution was third in 44.12s.
