Singapore Sports School, Friday, April 24, 2015 — Singapore Sports School’s quartet of Celeste Goh (#92), Ismi Zakiah (#93), Nurul Syarah (#98) and Portia Tan (#100) topped the B Division girls’ 4x400m relay field with a timing of 4 minutes and 9.19 seconds to win gold at the 56th National Inter-School Track and Field Championships.
The four had earlier clocked a timing of 4:18.22 in the heats to qualify as the second fastest team behind CHIJ Secondary (Toa Payoh).
“We were slightly nervous because the race was being held in our school, but having the whole school come down and support us, made us confident and think that we can do it,” said Ismi, who ran the second leg of the race.
Goh, who ran the anchor leg, added, “Because we lost in the SPH relays, we really really wanted a win, and thankfully, we did it.”
Tan, who started the race for Singapore Sports School, overtook Jayde Ashlea Yeung (#123) of CHIJ Secondary (Toa Payoh) at the 150-metre mark to propel the team into the lead, which they held throughout for the first-place finish.
CHIJ Secondary (Toa Payoh) eventually finished 1.70 seconds behind in second place, while CHIJ St. Nicholas Girls’ School completed the podium with a timing of 4:21.25.
Singapore Sports School’s victory helped them to clinch a joint-second finish alongside Nanyang Girls’ High in the divisional rankings. Both schools finished with a total of 121 points each.
Despite their fifth-place finish in this relay, Cedar Girls’ Secondary had accrued enough points to put them safely in the top spot to win the B Division girls’ challenge trophy. They finished with a total of 174 points.
