Temasek Polytechnic Sports Complex, Monday, May 11, 2015 — River Valley High School (RVHS) trumped Anderson Junior College (AJC) 79–34 in their first game of the second round at the National A Division Girls’ Netball Championship.

This gives RVHS their fifth straight win of the championship. In the preliminary rounds, the team won all of their games against Tampines Junior College (81–17), Pioneer Junior College (67–16), Saint Andrew’s Junior College (53–37) and Jurong Junior College (82–19).

On the other hand, AJC drop to a 2–2 win-loss record. They had won all of their preliminary round games except against defending champions Raffles Institution.

RVHS had a four-point lead (18–14) after the first quarter as their smooth play showed that they were the stronger team. Their Goal Keeper created many opportunities with her rebounds and intercepts. AJC kept close with their Centre making some critical passes.

RVHS extended their lead in the next quarter while AJC struggled to get the ball. The cold AJC defence in the centre third allowed RVHS to easily create turnovers, with their Wing Defence making critical steals. Hence RVHS were able to add an astounding 24 points to their score, whereas AJC only made seven shots as a result of a scoring drought in the first half of the quarter.

The third quarter saw RVHS dominate once again. Due to their swift passes and quality lobs, the team had greater ball possession. The score thus stood at 60–28 in RVHS’s favour entering the final quarter.

Although AJC’s Goal Shooter displayed accurate shots and nimble rebounds, half of her attempts were halted by RVHS’s Goal Keeper. As RVHS’s Goal Attack continued to give her Goal Shooter substantial support at the net, RVHS carried on their scoring spree to eventually sealed their 79–34 victory over AJC.

RVHS team captain, Jieshi, said, “It was a tough one, tougher than the rest of our previous matches. However, we didn’t expect the difference in the score to be this big.”

“Our defence was quite good today, especially our WD (Wing Defence) and shooters who were putting in the shots,” Jieshi added. “We worked together as a team. Although AJC’s defence in the circle was strong and their shooters were strong as well, we were able to get the rebounds and turnovers back.”

Both teams will move on to play their second game of Round Two on Wednesday, May 13 at Temasek Polytechnic Sports Complex. RVHS will face Anglo-Chinese School (Indpendent) at 10.15 am and AJC’s game against Anglo-Chinese Junior College will take place right after at 11.45 am.
