Yishun Sports Hall, Thursday, May 14, 2015 — Meridian Junior College (MJC) beat Anglo-Chinese Junior College (ACJC) 3–1 to clinch bronze in the National A Division Boys’ Floorball Championship.
The two teams were no strangers to one another, having met in the group stage where MJC won 4–3.
Abdul Mateen (#4) of MJC scored the opening goal with a shot into the top corner of the post. After several tries, ACJC responded with a goal from Vignesa Pasupathy (#33) to tie the score at 1–1.
The second quarter saw the pace of the game heighten, as both sides were desperate to take the lead. The two goalkeepers put up an outstanding performance, making good saves for their teams despite the pressure mounting. The score remained at 1–1, leaving all to play for in the final period.
MJC’s persistent efforts eventually saw them take the lead through Abdul Ra’uf (#12) who managed to shoot the ball into the bottom right corner of the goal post. After returning from a time-out, Muhammad Jazli (#21) of MJC scored another goal within seconds to extend their lead comfortably to 3–1.
With only four minutes left on the clock, ACJC were hoping for a comeback. ACJC substituted their keeper to play with six outfield players to focus on their attacks. Despite the multiple chances and attempts, ACJC were unable to find the back of the net. MJC managed to hold on and eventually emerged 3–1 victors.
MJC captain, Muhammad Nasrulhaq (#88) said, “At the start, we were a bit nervous but thanks to the immense support from the supporters, we managed to eventually play to our standards in the last few minutes of the third period.”
He added, “We came in wanting to win the championship but it was a bit unlucky on our part that we lost a last-minute goal to RI during the semi-final. I think the whole team did great today.”
ACJC captain, Kumaresa Pasupathy (#34), said, “It was a good match, MJC were strong opponents but we also prepared for it. Both teams fought hard and they took their chances. I give credit to my team, we fought till the end.”
On his thoughts on ACJC’s season, he added, “We started off very strongly, although we didn’t finish very well. As a team, we developed and forged very good bonds within the team. I think that’s the most important part.”
