National Stadium, Wednesday, June 10, 2015 — Defending champion Zhang Guirong won her sixth consecutive women’s shot put gold with a 14.60m throw on day two of the athletics events at the 28th Southeast Asian (SEA) Games.

She first won the event 10 years ago at the 23rd SEA Games in Manila. Zhang also holds the national record of 18.57m.

The athletics veteran led the pack from the start, being the first to throw over 14m in her second attempt with a distance of 14.02m. She bettered that in her next attempt, throwing a season’s best 14.60m to clinch the gold. Silver medallist Thailand’s Thongchao Sawitri could only manage a 13.62m throw.

Compatriot and Games debutant Hannah Lee came in fourth out of seven competitors with a throw of 12.56m.

In the women’s javelin throw final, Singapore’s Genis Phoa scored a new personal best with a throw of 40.15m to finish in seventh place. Teo Hui Juen threw a distance of 38.34m to come in eighth out of eight. The gold went to Thailand’s Nachan Natta, who set a new personal best of 54.38m.

In the last field event of the evening at the Men’s shot put final, Singaporeans Wong Kai Yuen and Tan Yong Sheng came in fifth and sixth respectively out of six competitors.

Despite finishing at the back of the pack, both Kai Yuen and Yong Sheng set new records for themselves. Kai Yuen secured a new season’s best with a throw of 15.16m. Yong Sheng threw a distance of 12.55m to set a new personal record.

Both Hannah Lee and Zhang Guirong will also feature in the women’s discus throw final scheduled for June 12, Friday, 4.20pm, at the National Stadium.
