National Stadium, Thursday, June 11, 2015 — In the discus throw final of the athletics competition at the 28th Southeast Asian (SEA) Games, Singaporeans Benny Lam and Landdis Su emerged fifth and seventh respectively out of seven competitors.
Benny threw a distance of 44.40m, while Landdis could only manage a distance of 39.36m.
Benny, who was disappointed with his performance, said, “I feel that I could have done a lot better but it was a great experience. This SEA Games I was expecting a personal best, but I didn’t manage to achieve it.”
Despite his disappointment, Benny also expressed his desire to work harder in order to compete with the region’s best.
The Games’ discus defending champion, Malaysia’s Muhammad Irfan Shamshuddin, retained his title with a throw of 56.62m. His winning throw was a full four metres ahead of Thailand’s Narong Benjaroon, who took the silver. His compatriot Kwanchai Numsomboon took bronze with a season’s best throw of 51.02m.
In the javelin throw final held earlier in the day, Singaporean Chong Weng Teng set a new personal best with a throw of 54.38m. Compatriot Koh Thong En achieved a distance of 50.28m. Weng Teng and Thong En came in fifth and sixth respectively out of six competitors.
Defending champion Peerachet Jantra from Thailand won the gold with a season’s best throw of 75.18m. It was a one-two finish for Thailand with Hussadin Rodmanee winning the silver with a season’s best throw of 70.96m. Myanmar’s Htwe Kyaw Nyi Nyi won the bronze.
