Clementi Sports Hall, Friday, August 14, 2015 — On the final day of the preliminary round of the National C Division Basketball Championship, East Zone runners-up Anglican High roughed it out against West Zone champions Bukit Panjang Government High in a top-of-table clash, earning a 47–43 victory in overtime.
Floor general Jovan Wong (#4) was the hero for Anglican High with a game-high 21 points, lifting his team back from a seven-point deficit to tie the game at the end of regulation.
Despite so, Wong’s (#4) heroics were undermined by his free throw percentage in regulation, as he dealt his team a scare when he missed the opportunity to seal the victory with five missed attempts from the charity stripe.
“I was a bit tense, and I started to miss my free throws in crunch time,” said Wong (#4).
However, in overtime, the point guard made up for it with his playmaking, while taking advantage of an exhausted Bukit Panjang squad.
“It feels great, and I just thank God that I had the mental strength to play on and redeem myself in the game.”
Wong also credited his team for the victory, which was their third straight, earning them the top spot in the group and a qualification for the second round.
“The only reason why we won is due to everyone’s mentality. We didn’t give up.”
Despite the loss, Bukit Panjang had no reason to sulk, enjoying a balanced output from the bench, led by 11 points from Amos Soh (#10).
This is their only loss in the preliminary round and they too, will advance to the second round.
