OCBC Aquatic Centre, Thursday, August 27, 2015 — Hoong En Qi highlighted Singapore’s performance on day three of the FINA World Junior Swimming Championships, clocking 27.32 seconds to finish 13th overall in a 66-strong field in the women’s 50 metres butterfly event.
She is currently the only Singaporean swimmer to have advanced past the heats over the past three days of competition. Her earlier timing of 27.59 seconds in the heats helped her qualify for the 16th and final spot in the semi-finals.
Compatriot Nicholle Toh, who also competed in the same event, finished in 39th place in 28.96 seconds. Toh also took part in the women’s 100 metres breaststroke event, where she clocked 1 minute and 14.44 seconds to finish 32nd out of 48 competitors, behind Kathlyn Laiu who finished 0.14 seconds ahead.
Hannah Quek, who had earlier clocked a personal best in the women’s 100 metres backstroke event on opening day, clocked 2 minutes and 19.16 seconds to finish 24th in a 48-strong women’s 200 metres backstroke field. Tan Jing-E followed nine places behind in 2 minutes and 22.15 seconds.
Featuring 68 swimmers, the men’s 50 metres backstroke event saw Francis Fong and Kevin Ong clock 26.70 seconds and 26.85 seconds to finish 25th and 28th respectively.
Fellow compatriots Teong Tzen Wei and Darren Lim participated in the men’s 50 metres freestyle event and finished 27th and 33rd out of 89 swimmers in 23.63 seconds and 23.75 seconds respectively.
In the Singaporeans’ final event for the day, Lim, together with Darren Chua, Tan Lee Shuen and Natasha Ong, registered a timing of 3 minutes and 42.19 seconds for an 11th-placed finish in the mixed 4×100 metres freestyle relay event, which saw a total of 27 participating teams.
