Padang, Thursday, October 29, 2015 – The schools segment of the Singapore Cricket Club International Rugby 7s (SCC 7s) has been cancelled because of the haze.
Also, if the Pollutant Standards Index (PSI) exceeds 200, play will be halted. The tournament will take place this weekend, October 30 to November 1.
Defending champions Borneo Eagles, a team based in Sabah, Malaysia, return to defend the Ablitt Cup, which they won for the first time in 2015. They will face stiff competition in the development squads of South Africa and France, who are gearing up for the upcoming World Rugby Sevens Series, and the Penguins from the United Kingdom.
South Africa will be participating as the SA Sevens Academy, after a three-year absence from the SCC 7s, while PNG Interoil Rais from Papua New Guinea and Sri Lanka Lions make their debut.
Said Kyle Brown, captain of the SA Sevens Academy: “Winning the tournament is not really our number one objective. Instead, we want the young guys on the team to gain experience and playing in the SCC 7s allows just that. The SCC 7s is part of our pre-season and our focus will be the start of the World Series in December.”
Jonathan Leow, chairman of the SCC 7s organising committee, said: “We have a very exciting line-up this year, and fans should prepare themselves for an exciting weekend of rugby with their friends and their families. We look forward to seeing the teams battle it out, and it’s going to be another memorable weekend of rugby festival not to be missed!”
