Singapore Basketball Centre, Wednesday, January 13, 2016 — Anderson Secondary (AND) were never seriously troubled as they beat North View Secondary (NVS) 50-23 on the opening day of the 2016 North Zone B Division Basketball Championship.

Anderson were led by Koon Meng Kiat (#12) and Khoo Jun Jie (#8) with 16 and 15 points respectively. (NVS #9) had 14 points to lead his team.

From the opening tip, Anderson had the upper hand and led 17-8 after the 1st quarter.

Behind an imposing man-to-man half-court defense and the occasional full court press, Anderson consistently denied North View any scoring opportunities. North View responded by moving the ball patiently around the perimeter to look for an opening, but still found scoring chances limited.

Anderson then capped a productive 2nd quarter with an 8-0 run in the final five minutes of the quarter, extending their lead to 17 points heading into the break.

It was more of the same after the break as Anderson scored five unanswered points to force a timeout by North View with 8:50 to go in the third. However, North View could not quite find the response necessary to close the gap as Anderson extended its lead to 36-10 heading into the fourth.

Despite another 5-0 run by Anderson to start the 4th quarter, North View refused to back down. Two lay-ups in quick succession by #9 and #12 of NVS provided them with a boost. North View would then go on an 8-2 run to bring the score to 43-18 with five minutes to go. #9 of NVS scored seven of his 14 points in the 4th quarter alone.

Cedric Cheo’s (AND #6) put back lay-up with three minutes remaining would blow the lead up to 30, Anderson’s largest lead of the game. Anderson ultimately emerged as 50-23 winners.

Rajvir Singh Gill (AND #13) said, “We didn’t defend properly. We want to improve by committing less fouls.”

Anderson next play Northland Secondary on Friday, January 15 while North View take on Woodlands Ring Secondary on Monday, January 18.
