Anglican High School, Tuesday, January 19, 2016 — Bedok View Secondary School (BVSS) defeated Manjusri Secondary School (MJR) 33-16 in a hard-fought match in the East Zone B Division Girls’ Basketball Championship.
Nicole (#13) of Bedok View scored a game-high nine points while Gladys (#0) had a team-high seven points for Manjusri.
The game started with neither team focusing much on their defence. However, towards the second half of the 1st quarter, Bedok View began to adopt a man-to-man defence, preventing Manjusri from scoring.
Manjusri reacted by attempting long passes across the court, which were easily intercepted by Bedok View’s players. This allowed Bedok View to secure a 11-0 run to establish a large lead.
However, Manjusri seemed to be gaining momentum. Despite being unable to score any baskets in the first quarter, they fought aggressively and refused to let up, eventually managing to score three points in the 2nd quarter.
By the second half of the game, ball-snatching between players had become a common sight; both teams fought fire with fire and grew increasingly competitive.
Unfortunately, Bedok View lost some steam – many shots aimed at the basket hit the perimeter of the backboard instead, resulting in fewer and fewer points scored per quarter. On the other hand, Manjusri managed to sharpen their focus as the game progressed, outscoring Bedok View 10-4 in the final quarter.
Nonetheless, the huge deficit in the first half was too large for Manjusri to close and Bedok View won the game 33-16.
“We made a few mistakes this match but we did our best,” said Jessica Chua (#8), captain of Bedok View.
“We can also improve on our communication and our trailers,” said Sharlene Wong (#7), vice-captain of Bedok View.
