OCBC Arena, Friday, January 22, 2016 — After an intense first quarter, Mayflower Secondary (MF) eventually pulled away from St. Andrew’s Secondary (SAS) to win the match 43-20 in the South Zone B Division Basketball Championship.

Jordan (MF #7) from Mayflower led with a game-high of eleven points, while Caleb (SAS #11) led his team with six.

This was the first win for Mayflower and they improved to a 1-2 win-loss record. St. Andrew’s fell to 0-3 and both teams are out of the running for round two.

Pit (MF #5) scored the first basket of the game within the first 15 seconds with a three-pointer. Jia Sing (SAS #13) followed up with two points with two free throws.

Han Li (MF #10) threw a cross-court pass for Kevin (MF #8) who went on to score but a three-point shot by Elston (SAS #15) evened things out at 7-7. The quarter ended with Mayflower narrowly ahead of St Andrew’s at 10-8.

In the second quarter, three-pointers from Jurgen (MF #11), Ibrahim (MF #6), and Chase (MF #9) extended the lead further for Mayflower as Mayflower showed their teamwork and efficient gameplay with a 20-5 quarter to lead 30-13 at half time.

In the third quarter, both teams scored mainly from free throws as they were visibly exhausted from the intense first half. Mayflower employed man-to-man defence for the better half of a low-scoring quarter that saw them edge St. Andrew’s 4-3 to bring a 34-16 lead into the fourth quarter.

The final quarter of the game saw both teams upping the intensity. Jordan (MF #7) sank a three-pointer, while Caleb (SAS #11) countered with a under basket shot.

Nicko (MF #15) scored the last basket of the match in the final two minutes, as Mayflower outscored St. Andrew’s 9-4 to wrap up the 43-20 win.
