OCBC Arena, Thursday, January 28, 2016 — Kuo Chuan Presbyterian secured a 33-20 win over Holy Innocents’ High in the South Zone B Division Netball Championship.
Kuo Chuan Presbyterian led from start to finish; however, it was not without a fight.
Kuo Chuan Presbyterian tactics were clear from the start of the game – Cheryl Tan (C) would pass the ball to Lerena Chan (WD), who would pass it to Mandy Oh (GA), In turn, Mandy would then find Foo Wei Qi (GS) for an attempt. This often worked most of the time, especially as the Kuo Chuan Presbyterian players had remarkable sprint speed and laudable ball-handling skills.
In particular, Kuo Chuan Presbyterian’s goal shooter, Foo Wei Qi, was exceptional at scoring, with most of her shots going into the hoop on the first attempt.
By the end of the 1st quarter, the score was 10-5 in Kuo Chuan Presbyterian’s favour.
Holy Innocents’, determined to close the score gap, made long passes across the court in an attempt to get the ball across the court and score before Kuo Chuan Presbyterian players could catch up. While they succeeded some of the time, Kuo Chuan Presbyterian were adept at intercepting the passes.
The teams took turns to score and by half-time, Kuo Chuan Presbyterian led 18-9.
Kuo Chuan Presbyterian took advantage of empty space, running into empty spaces to anticipate their teammates’ moves. Kuo Chuan Presbyterian were more active in their offence, while Holy Innocents’ focused more on their defence, intent on preventing the ball from falling into the wrong hands.
Ultimately, Holy Innocents’ were unable to close the gap and Kuo Chuan Presbyterian triumphed with a 33-20 victory.
“We can improve on our communication,” said captain Cheryl Tan, who plays the centre position for Kuo Chuan Presbyterian.
“We could do better,” agreed vice-captain Mandy Oh (GA). “We need to improve on our defence as well.”
