OCBC Arena, Thursday, January 28, 2016 — Raffles Girls’ School beat Guangyang Secondary 27-21 after turning the game around in the final quarter in the South Zone B Division Girls’ Basketball Championship.

In the first quarter, RGS quickly gained possession of the ball and brought it quickly across the court with their swift footwork and exceptional ball-handling skills. However, shooting appeared to be their downfall; their initial shots were inaccurate and Guangyang caught the rebounds to gain possession.

Guangyang, on the other hand, exhibited impressive shooting, scoring baskets one after another easily. Owing to Guangyang’s solid defence and RG’s imprecise shooting, Guangyang led 9-0 after the first quarter.

Things continued to look up for Guangyang in the second quarter, with RGS still failed to sink any baskets in the first few minutes. RGS finally scored their first basket with 6 minutes and 40 seconds remaining; Guangyang quickly retaliated, scoring another two points in the next 10 seconds.

RGS were tenacious and adept at dribbling and passing the ball across the court, but failed to close the score gap due to Guangyang’s relentless defence. Guangyang led 15-4 at half-time.

In the third quarter, RGS seemed to get their momentum. RGS mercilessly and repeatedly stole the ball from Guangyang, allowing RGS to secure a decisive 10-point run and reducing the deficit to just 1 point (16-17) by the end of the 3rd quarter.

The final quarter was especially intense, with RGS fighting hard to gain points while Guangyang fought back to retain the lead they had maintained throughout the game.

Within the first 40 seconds of the start of the fourth quarter, Guangyang sank a basket to lead 19-16. However, the tables were turned when RGS managed a 4-point run with seven minutes remaining to lead by one point. At this point, the massive crowd supporting RGS responded by erupting into cheers and screams.

For the remainder of the game, RGS fought hard to pull away and defended fiercely to prevent Guangyang from closing the gap, with Vennessa (#10) from RGS even managing to fall into a full split on the ground in an attempt to prevent Guangyang from gaining possession.

With less than a minute remaining, RGS managed one final 2-point shot to seal the 27-21 win.

“We are very happy with the results! We weren’t very confident about today’s game but we played really hard and used teamwork to win,” beamed Rhianne (#8), captain of RGS.
