Republic Poly Competition Hall, Wednesday, January 27, 2016 – Nanyang Technological University (NTU) made a comeback in the second period to secure a 5-2 final win against Temasek Polytechnic (TP) in the Institute-Varsity-Polytechnic (IVP) Floorball Championship.
In the group stages, TP had beaten NTU 3-1.
It looked as though it was going to be a sure win for TP as they brought that same dominance in the group stage to the first period with multiple shots on target. TP’s Muhd Tarmizi (#44) scored the first goal for his team within minutes of the start for an early lead.
TP continued to control the game and keep possession, making it hard for NTU to find opportunities to score. NTU had a few shots on target towards the end of the first period but they were all deflected by TP’s keeper, Rahmadiansyah (#92). The first period ended 1-0 to TP.
Despite being the underdogs, NTU played with new found confidence as Timothy Goh (#27) scored the equaliser in less than 3 minutes into the second period. TP, desperate to get the lead back, made many shot attempts from the slot area but NTU’s keeper Isaac Jiang (#35) made vital saves.
Soon after, NTU’s captain Glendon Phua (#20) scored yet another goal from behind by rebounding off TP’s keeper to gain a 2-1 lead. TP increased their defensive efforts to pressure NTU into mistakes, and it paid off when one of NTU’s defenders tried to make a pass but ended up scoring an own goal instead to make it 2-2.
The third period was heated. A wrist shot by Hazmi Bin Hasan (NTU #99) brought the NTU supporters to their feet as he placed the ball in the corner of the net to give his team a slim 3-2 lead over TP.
With the IVP title on the line, both teams became more physical and NTU’s Brian Tan (#9) was given a two-minute penalty for pushing. This was TP’s chance to level the score with their power play. TP made impressive passes and were able to keep possession during the two minutes. However, they were unable to break through NTU’s defence and their shots went wide.
With only five minutes left on the clock, Amos Tan (#8) from NTU scored a goal from the free hit to extend their lead to 4-2. TP, desperate to equalise, substituted their keeper with an outfield player to play with six men. Despite multiple chances, they were still unable to find the back of the net.
NTU took control of the ball in the last few minutes and managed a shot into the open goal to seal the 5-2 win.
NTU’s Timothy Goh (#27) said, “The game was pretty intense because basically in the group stage we lost to them. I’m very proud of how the team played. We played for ourselves, for our coach, but most importantly we played together as a team. I felt like that is what brought us the victory against TP.”
He added, “I feel ecstatic after the game. There are no words to describe it, because we’ve been working for six to eight months, I’m just very very proud of my team.”
