Hougang Sports Hall, Monday, February 1, 2016 — A resilient Swiss Cottage Secondary SCS) tried in vain, but could not prevent a Si Ling Secondary (SLS) victory in this National B Division Floorball Championship preliminary Group E encounter.

This was Si Ling’s first win in the competition, after losing their first game 3–9 to East View Secondary. For Swiss Cottage, this was a step backwards after beating Assumption Pathway School 28–0 in their previous match. Hence, this leaves both Si Ling and Swiss Cottage each with a current win-loss record of 1–1.

Si Ling’s Muhammad Hudzalif (#16) bagged the first goal as early as the fourth minute. An equaliser by Swiss Cottage’s Muhammad Aminin (#7) four minutes before the end of the first period was followed by a swift reply from Si Ling’s Adri Faiz (#25) just 20 seconds from the restart for a 2-1 lead.

The second period started out as a quieter affair as both teams began to settle down and execute steady passes. Then two minutes before the end, Hudzalif (#16) scored again, smashing the ball into the top corner of the net, to extend Si Ling’s lead to two goals at 3-1.

However, Swiss Cottage were not going to back down. Led by Muhammad Alif (#12), they pulled one back 14 seconds before the end of Period 2 and then scored the improbable equaliser just one minute after Period 3 began, with the ball smashed against the underside of the crossbar and into the net for 3-3.

The immediate aftermath was a scramble by both teams in search of the winner. As it turned out, Si Ling managed to gather themselves from the minor setback to slot in two more goals in the third period to emerge victorious.

Muhammad Zhafri (SLS #19) scrambled the ball into the net for the fourth goal while Fiqri Syamie (SLS #22) shimmied past a Swiss Cottage defender from the left side of the court and deftly hit the ball into the top corner to ensure the victory.

When asked what went through his mind when Swiss Cottage drew level at 3–3, Si Ling captain and two-goal scorer Hudzalif (#16) said, “Of course we felt a little down, but I told my teammates that we could not give up and we had to fight till the end. After the previous game where we lost to East View, we felt demoralised but I feel that as long as we give our 200%, anything is possible. I don’t believe in talent, I believe in hardwork.”

He added that his team will approach their next game against powerhouses Bukit Merah without fear and insisted they still have a good chance of going through into the second round of the competition if they continue showing the same belief.

Si Ling versus Bukit Merah is slated to be held on Wednesday, February 10 at Hougang Sports Hall, where Swiss Cottage will also have their next match against Spectra Secondary.
