OCBC Arena, Wednesday, February 3, 2016 — Bartley Secondary (BSS) fell short of a comeback as Whitley Secondary (WSS) held on for a 25-22 victory in both teams’ final match of the South Zone B Division Basketball Championship.
Entering the game, both teams had already been eliminated from the Championship having lost to both Kuo Chuan Presbyterian Secondary and Queenstown Secondary.
Kuo Chuan Presbyterian had defeated Queenstown in a thrilling top of the table clash on the adjacent court to finish top of Group D.
Despite the defeat, Ong Yu Tong (#9) of Bartley was happy about his team’s performance. “It’s been a while since we have played such a good game. Everyone in the team stepped up, which made it possible for us to play such a good game.”
Whitley got off to a quick 6-0 start, led by Kenneth Ang (WSS #9) who scored all of his four points early in the game. Bartley replied by closing the quarter out on a 7-2 run, to trail just by one point (7-8) after the first quarter.
In what turned out to be a scrappy encounter, Whitley enjoyed the better of the exchanges in the 2nd quarter and extended their lead to 17-8 at the half. The highlight of the quarter came when a series of one touch passes by Whitley in and around the paint found a wide-open big man under the basket for an easy two.
Bartley were an outstanding bunch in the 3rd quarter, shutting out their opponents completely. They scored 11 unanswered points in the quarter to take a 19-17 lead.
Whitley, however, refused to buckle under pressure, retaking the lead at 20-19 with 7:25 to play thanks to Brian Lim (WSS #8).
Despite a relentless effort by Bartley, they never took the lead again. Whitley likewise could not pull away from their opponents as sporadic offense from both teams hampered their chances.
Whitley extended their lead to three with 1:20 remaining and held on for a season-ending 25-22 victory.
Captain, Zhi Jie (WSS #7) commented, “My team lacks defense, communication and team work. We tried our best to break their full court defense but we still have lots to work on.”
With the conclusion of the game, both team’s season came to an end. The 2nd round of the South Zone B Division Championship will commence on February 12 after the Chinese New Year break.
