Singapore Basketball Centre, Friday, February 12, 2016 – Top contender North Vista Secondary remained unbeaten after they defeated long-time rivals Presbyterian High 71-34 in Round 2 of the North Zone B Division Basketball Championship.
Christian Pepito (NV #19) scored an impressive game-high 27 points while Dillion Yap (#23) had 13 points to lead Presbyterian High.
North Vista dominated from the start as they gained possession from the tip off and immediately scored a foul-in to gain 3 points and take the lead. Not only were they quick in offense, they also had a solid defence, which prevented Presbyterian High from cutting into the paint.
Presbyterian High resorted to making shot attempts from outside the 3-point line but were unable to score and also lost in rebounding. However, they too had a tight defence and prevented North Vista from scoring many baskets. A low-scoring first quarter ended with North Vista leading 9-4.
Presbyterian High were keen to catch up and started the second quarter with an aggressive full court press. However, North Vista were undeterred and continued to extend their lead to 12 points. Sim Xuan (#2) in particular, made two 3-pointers and was responsible for half of the North Vista points made in the quarter.
Despite being on the losing end, Presbyterian High did not give up and managed to reduce the deficit to five points (22-27) as Jerel Tan (#13) scored a 3-pointer in the third quarter.
It was not long before North Vista pulled away as they replied with 3-pointers of their own. North Vista had five made 3s in the third quarter which helped extend their lead yet again.
The game continued with North Vista in control and scoring most of their baskets from fast break lay-ups. Presbyterian High made a valiant effort but fell short.
Sim Xuan (NV #2) said, “Even though we have four men down, including an injury to one of our centres, the other three centres stepped up to grab many rebounds. But they still need to bulk up on defensive rebounds and box out.”
North Vista next face Edgefield Secondary and Presbyterian High will go up against Yio Chu Kang Secondary.
