Singapore Basketball Centre, Friday, February 12, 2016 — Catholic High made nine-3 pointers on their way to defeating Maris Stella High 59-40, claiming their first victory in the 2nd round of the North Zone B Division Basketball Championship.

Catholic High had previously qualified for the 2nd round as Group D winners while Maris Stella entered the game as Group B runners-up.

Catholic High were led by guards Evan Teh (#69) and Joshua Lim (#7), getting 15 and 10 points from them respectively. They combined for five 3-pointers in the game. #14 of Maris Stella bagged a game-high 19 points in the contest.

The teams were evenly-matched to start the game, with a couple of ties and lead changes the story of the 1st quarter. Maris Stella were aggressive on the boards, at times grabbing offensive rebounds at ease for simple second-chance points.

Luke (CHS #5) acknowledged that his team has room for improvement. “Our threes were good but on the defensive end we missed a lot of rebounds and gave up a lot of second-chance points.”

Catholic High’s guards forced a couple of turnovers which helped fuel a 9-2 run in the 2nd quarter. Maris Stella though would continue to dominate the boards and kept the score close with a couple of three-point plays.

Despite a commendable effort from Maris Stella, failure to slow Catholic High’s offense proved to be their downfall.

A 3-pointer by Fan Yao En (CHS #2) late in the 2nd quarter put Catholic High up by double figures, an advantage they never relinquished for the remainder of the game.

Catholic High remained firmly in control in the 2nd half as Maris Stella never threatened a comeback, allowing Catholic High to claim a 19-point victory.

With regard to his team’s performance, Travis (CHS #3) said, “Like what coach said, we played well on offense but we have to play better on defense. It’s the 2nd round and there won’t be easy games so we have to play better and need to push the tempo more.”

In Group Z’s other results, Ahmad Ibrahim Secondary edged out Bowen Secondary 62-58 in a nail-biting encounter while Christ Church Secondary defeated Anderson Secondary 51-38.
