OCBC Arena, Friday, February 12, 2016 — Gan Eng Seng School (GES) kept it close but Raffles Institution (RI) eventually managed to outscore them with a series of 3-pointers in the second half to triumph 55-48 in the South Zone B Division Basketball Championship.
Brendon Ngiam (#8) of Raffles scored a game-high 17 points while Khoo Heng Zhou (#13) of Gan Eng Seng led his team with 15 points.
Kevin Jung (#9) of Raffles opened the game with a spectacular 3-pointer within the first eight seconds of the game. However, Khoo Heng Zhou (#13) of Gan Eng Seng retaliated with a 3-pointer within the next 30 seconds. This was to set the tone for the rest of the half. Both teams walked off tied 29-29 by half time.
The pressure mounted as both teams vied to outdo the other. Both teams adopted man-to-man defence in the second half, choosing not to continue with the zonal defence they had employed in the first half.
Gan Eng Seng initially pulled away from Raffles in the beginning of the second half, with Heng Zhou (#13) of Gan Eng Seng scoring the first basket and earning his team 3 points as they went on a 9-2 run to edge ahead 36-31.
However, Raffles came back with a 5-0 run, tying it up at 36-36 with under 3 minutes of the 3rd quarter remaining.
In the last 2 minutes, Raffles managed to pour in an impressive 11 points to pull away from Gan Eng Seng and lead 47-37 heading into the fourth.
Raffles were able to maintain their edge over Gan Eng Seng in the final quarter to secure a 55-48 win.
“We played very well from the start; we found our rhythm from the beginning, and I’m very proud of the team,” said Liu Jia Wei (#7), captain of the Raffles team.
“I think we played well, but we came up short,” said Gan Eng Seng’s team captain.
