Clementi Sports Complex, Monday, February 15, 2016 — Bukit Panjang Government High School beat Dunearn Secondary 37-23 in the West Zone B Division Basketball Championship.

Bukit Panjang finish Round 1 with a 4-1 win-loss record and second place in their group after Unity Secondary. They qualify for Round 2 and are now a step closer to their goal of getting into the top four in the West Zone.

Bukit Panjang’s Javern (#7) scored a game high of 15 points while #7 from Dunearn led his team with 7 points.

Dunearn’s tight zone defense forced Bukit Panjang to make passes and shoot near the arc, which were not always successful. Bukit Panjang’s attempts at driving in were met with strong defense and they were unable to score much.

In return, Bukit Panjang played an aggressive half court man-to-man defense and they were able to intercept quite a few of Dunearn’s passes.

Both teams bagged quite a lot of defensive rebounds and managed to convert them into points. This resulted in Dunearn trailing behind Bukit Panjang for most of the 1st and 2nd quarter by a small margin. Bukit Panjang led 22-16 at half time.

The 3rd quarter saw both teams playing a more aggressive attack and attempting to make more shots. However, a few careless passes and fumbling with the ball on Dunearn’s end allowed Bukit Panjang to make easy interceptions and score on a few fast breaks to pull further away.

Bukit Panjang were not without their careless mistakes though as their players sometimes accidentally dropped the ball and allowed Dunearn to easily intercept the ball. Dunearn however were not able to convert these interceptions into points and they went scoreless in the 3rd quarter to allow Bukit Panjang to lead 30-16 heading into the fourth.

In the 4th quarter, Dunearn’s aggressive fighting for the offensive rebound managed to score them a few points. Their equally tough defense also made it difficult for Bukit Panjang to score much. Despite that, Dunearn were unable to overcome the deficit and Bukit Panjang won 37-23.

Bukit Panjang captain, Javern (#7), described the game as starting out “sluggish” but picking up towards the end. He also feels that his team has improved on their rebounds and has also come a long way from their first game.
