OCBC Arena, Friday, February 19, 2016 – Yuying Secondary (YYS) defeated Peicai (PCS) 47-34 in round 2 of the South Zone B Division Basketball Championship.
With the victory, Yuying improved to a 3-1 win-loss record in round 2 and will have to win the next game against Fairfield to secure a spot in the semi-final. On the other hand, Peicai have lost all their matches so far in round 2.
Nicholas Lim (PCS #7) had a game high of 15 points while Ariel Lee (YYS #11) led his team to victory with 12 points.
Yuying took the lead from the start with a solid defence that prevented Peicai from breaking in to score. On offense, Yuying sank many shots, including a 3 pointer by Kenneth Tan (#5), to lead by 8 points at the end of the quarter.
In the second quarter, Yuying capitalised on their strong defense to force Peicai into turnovers and scored most points through fast breaks. Peicai was unable to keep up and were 19 points away from Yuying at the end of the second quarter.
After the half, Peicai came back with renewed determination, starting the third quarter with a full-court press. Peicai managed to intercept a few passes to outscore Yuying and reduce the deficit. However, Yuying was not about to give in so easily as Ariel Lee (#11) led his team with 7 points in that quarter to end the third 38-23.
Yuying continued to keep their lead in the fourth quarter and ended the game with a 3 pointer by Chay Wen Fu (#6). Yuying emerged victorious with a 47-34 victory.
Ariel Lee (#11), captain of Yuying, said, “We played badly and had a lot of turnovers, but in the end it’s still a good game. We trained hard and we go all out for every game. I feel good after the win because we had to fight with them for the last match.”
Yuying will have to fight it out with Fairfield for a semi-final spot on Monday, February 22. Peicai have been on the losing end and do not qualify for the semi-final. They next face Queensway who are out of the running as well.
