Clementi Sports Hall, Tuesday, April 5, 2016 — Catholic High School (CH) held off a last quarter comeback by Woodgrove Secondary (WG) to take the 43-40 win in their opening Round 2 game of the National B Division Basketball Championship.
Chua Kai Xuan (CH #4) had a game high of 19 points, including two 3-pointers, while, Jack Lascado (WG #7) led Woodgrove with nine.
Catholic High had five 3-pointers in the game, with Evan Teh (CH #69) sinking three of them. Woodgrove, on the other hand, focused on breaking into the paint with their big centre, Yap Chun Jack (#15).
Catholic High set a fast tempo at the start which Woodgrove found difficult to keep up with. Woodgrove’s defense was not tight enough, as they gave away many free baskets. As a result, the first quarter ended with Catholic High leading 12-4.
Woodgrove stepped up their game in the second quarter. They tightened their defense and outscored Catholic High 12-9. This narrowed the deficit to five points (16-21) at half time.
Just one minute into the third quarter, Woodgrove narrowed the deficit to one point (20-21). Jack Lascado (WG #7) then dropped the go-ahead layup to give Woodgrove a 22-21 lead.
Catholic High, however, did not roll over, and wrestled back the lead. Justin Lee (CH #1) dropped a layup while Chua Kai Xuan (CH #4) sank a 3-pointer as Catholic High threatened to pull away.
Woodgrove stuck close, and they ended the third quarter down only a point (30-31).
Evan Teh (CH #69) dropped two 3-pointers in the final quarter while Jack Lascado (WG #7) continued to torment Catholic High with his dribbling skills.
Woodgrove pushed Catholic High all the way. Renneth Tan (WG #9) sinking a 3-pointer to reduce the deficit to two points (40-42) with seven seconds left on the clock but Kai Xuan (#4) sank a free throw to help Catholic High wrap up the win.
Catholic High will next take on School of Science and Technology (SST) on April 7 at Clementi Sports Hall.
