Hwa Chong Institution, Monday, April 11, 2016 — Eric Yee of Hwa Chong Institution (HCI) clinched the A Division Boys’ discus gold at the 57th National Schools Track and Field Championships with a new championship record of 53.48 metres.
His throw distance erased the old 52.94m mark set by Scott Wong, then of HCI, eight years ago.
It fell short of his personal best, though, which is the current national under-18 discus (1.5kg) record of 55.06m, set at the Singapore Athletics National U18/U20 Championships in March this year.
Eric, a Year 5 student at HCI, also holds the current national under-20 discus (1.75kg) record of 50.44m, set at the Singapore Athletics Track and Field Series 2 in February this year.
On his National Schools feat, Eric remarked, “I think it feels okay, it’s not a PB but it’s still good. I mean, I am satisfied because now I hold all the 1.5kg (discus) records. Going into the Nationals that was my aim – to break the championship record. So it does feel good but I felt I could have thrown further.”
Eric’s discus victory also meant that he bounced back from disappointment in the shot put event three days earlier, where he finished in fourth place.
“I think there was too much pressure to win, then I got nervous. I think sometimes you have ups and downs, some days you don’t do so well,” he said of his performance in the shot put.
Eric is still in an optimistic mood, however, and hopes to get close to the national men’s open discus record in the future.
Paying tribute to those around him, he said, “I have to thank my coach, family, and thank my juniors, of course. I train with them, and when I coach them, I learn a lot of things at the same time.”
