Bishan Stadium, Monday, April 18, 2016 — Arfan Azhar of Singapore Sports School leapt 13.46 metres to claim the B Division Boys’ triple jump gold at the 57th National Schools Track and Field Championships.

Ernest Ong (13.39m) and Brandon Lim (13.26m), both of Hwa Chong Institution, came in second and third respectively.

Arfan recorded his gold-winning 13.46m distance on his fifth jump. It was also a personal best, breaking his previous mark of 13.04m.

This was the Secondary Three student’s second straight National Schools triple jump gold medal. He had won the C Division event last year with a 12.03m jump.

The last jumper to achieve such a feat was Sports School alumnus Benjamin Ong in 2010/2011.

On his performance, Arfan commented, “At first it was very hot, which made my vision very blur, so I wasn’t really confident of my jumps. Then my coach, as a way of motivation, sprayed water on me. He wanted me to do well in this competition. I think I did my best in all my jumps, although it didn’t really meet my expectations. But I am still very satisfied.”

“I want to thank my coach, my friends who supported me, and my family,” he added.

Arfan will now look to do well in the long jump, although he does not have high expectations as the long jump is not his pet event.

The B Division Boys’ long jump will take place on Friday, April 22.
