Bishan Stadium, Monday, April 18, 2016 – Joey Lim of Cedar Girls’ Secondary broke the record when she clocked 9 minutes 0.27 seconds to win the C Division 1500m Walk at the 57th National Schools Track and Field Championships.
The previous record was 09:10.74 set by Dora Shoo Gek Peng in 2014.
Lee Pei En of CHIJ St Nicholas Girls’ School was second in 09:14.31 while her teammate Jolene Tan was third in 09:27.41.
Jolene finished just 0.15 seconds ahead of Brigette Teo of Cedar Girls’.
Joey trailed behind teammate Brigette at the beginning, but she soon caught up and overtook her in the second round. From then on, Joey maintained her lead to finish the race in first place.
When asked about her feelings about the race, Joey said, “I felt that I pushed myself a lot. My timing was not really that good during training – my teammates were faster, so honestly I did not expect that I would take the win.”
Joey added, “Our training was filled with a lot of long intense walks most of the time. Despite so, our last training was tapered down so that we would not overwork ourselves before the final race.”
