Bishan Stadium, Thursday, April 21, 2016 — Keira Apeland of CHIJ Katong Convent (KC) clocked a new personal best of 1 minute 3.44s seconds to secure the C Division Girls 400m gold at the 57th National Schools Track and Field Championships.
Keira took home the gold after emerging out of the final bend with enough left in the tank for her final sprint.
Three Nanyang Girls’ High (NYGH) and two Cedar Girls’ Secondary athletes lined up at the start in a field of eight finalists.
Keira bettered her semi-finals timing by 0.02s in her win. Coming in second was Phoebe Law of NYGH with a time of 01:04.36. Liu Jingyi of CHIJ St. Nicholas Girls’ School took third place in 01:05.68.
Phoebe improved her semi-finals timing by almost 0.7s to win the silver medal for the second year running, after clocking 1:03.79 last year.
Keira did not participate in last year’s 400 metres race, running the 1500 metres event instead where she finished in second place.
After the race, Keira commented, “It wasn’t a very good race for me because I felt like I could have pushed more on the 200 metres mark and I was aiming for a timing of 1.01s. I was supposed to follow the 1st runner till the 200 metres mark and then pick up the pace.“
Keira will run the 800m final next, followed by the 4x400m heats and the 4x100m final on the last day of the Championships.
