Hougang Sports Hall, Friday, April 22, 2016 – Raffles Institution (RI) beat Pioneer Junior College (PJC) 7-2 for their third win in round 1 of the National Floorball A Division Championship.
PJC had previously lost 1-5 to Anglo-Chinese Junior College and beaten Innova Junior College (IJC) 8-1. RI remain undefeated and are currently top of their group.
Foo Jun Wei (RI #17) was the top scorer with three goals in the last period. Mohamad Ruzain (#6) scored 2 goals for PJC.
Ryan Tan (RI #68) scored the first goal in the opening period but PJC soon equalised with a goal by Mohamad Ruzain (#6) from a free hit.
Caius Goh (RI #9) then placed the ball in the back of the net to take back the lead. Despite countless shot attempts from both sides, the keepers Chester Ng (RI #1) and Sherman Teo (PJC #1) were in fine form and the first period ended 2-1 to RI.
Pioneer made a comeback in the second period as Mohamad Ruzain (#6) scored within the first few seconds to equalise. However, Raffles quickly took the lead again with a fast break by Mohammad Haziq (#29) who set up Caius Goh (#9) for an easy goal.
Besides an impressive offence, Raffles had a good double team defence as well and pressured Pioneer in their attacking half. Pioneer stood their ground and had a few shots on goal but goalkeeper Chester Ng (RI #1) saved to help RI preserve the 3-2 lead at the end of the second period.
The third period saw Raffles dominating with four goals. Pioneer could not keep up and were scoreless throughout. Foo Jun Wei (RI #17) in particular scored three consecutive goals to end the game.
Top scorer Jun Wei (#17) said, “It was a very slow start but I think we managed to pick up towards the end. We are always very sluggish at the start so I think we need to improve on that and have a fast start.”
Regarding his three goals, he added, “I think it was very much a team effort because it was a pass and shoot and we had to work together to get the goal.”
Raffles next face IJC while Pioneer will go up against Tampines Junior College.
