Bishan Stadium, Monday, April 25, 2016 – Joyceleen Yap of Cedar Girls’ Secondary took home her first gold with a 5 minutes 16.34 seconds run in the B Division girls’ 1500m final at the 57th National Schools Track and Field Championships.
Joyceleen had finished second last year to Arissa Rashid of Nanyang Girls’ High who had an unfortunate accident in the final straight.
Arissa was still leading in the last lap with Joyceleen right behind her when she fell just a few metres before the finishing line. Joyceleen went on to overtake Arissa who missed out on her fourth straight 1500m gold.
Coming in second was Joyceleen’s teammate Vera Wah who clocked a timing of 5:17.80 while Phoebe Kee of Singapore Chinese Girls’ School (SCGS) finished third with a 5:18.66.
When asked about her feelings about the race, Joyceleen replied, “I thought it was a pretty good race. It was a tough race but I think I fought it well, so I am happy.”
The time is a new personal best timing for Joyceleen. Her previous PB was 5:17.81 set last year.
The B Division girls’ 1500m record is 4:56.61, set by Yvonne Lim Cui Wen, then of Singapore Sports School, in 2006.
