Bishan Stadium, Monday, April 25, 2016 — Shahmee Ruzain of Catholic Junior College (CJC) clocked 22.49 seconds to claim the A Division Boys’ 200 metres gold at the 57th National Schools Track and Field Championships.
Dinesh Hulbert of St. Andrew’s Junior College finished second in 22.76s, while Elgene Chng of Hwa Chong Institution came in third in 22.93s.
It was Shahmee’s first ever National Schools gold medal, and also CJC’s first gold in a boys’ track event in at least 32 years. Last year, while representing Yishun Town Secondary, he had finished sixth in the B Division 100m (11.76s) and seventh in the 200m (23.86s).
He also bettered his previous personal best of 22.73s, which was clocked in the semi-finals.
On his victory, Shahmee said, “It was a good run, there was very tough competition. I think this year it was very close. Honestly, this is only my second Nationals, so I didn’t really expect to do very well. I have to say thank you to my coach.”
Shahmee has started training under Mr Loh Chan Pew since the beginning of the year.
Explaining his huge improvement from last year, he said, “I think it’s because of my coach, I definitely trained harder this year. Because last year, my school didn’t have track and field, so I trained by myself. But this year, I have a coach in my school, so we train much more. And he definitely gave me a lot of tips.”
Shahmee, whose 200m time is the eighth fastest locally this year, will now look to complete the sprint double gold, as he has qualified fastest for the 100m final with a 11.29s run in the semi-finals.
The 100m final will take place on Friday, April 29, at the National Stadium. On the same day, he will also run in the 4x100m and 4x400m relays for his CJC team.
On his hopes for the 100m final, Shahmee said, “I will run my best and hopefully I do get the double gold.”
