National Stadium, Friday, April 29, 2016 — Singapore Sports School (SSP) set a new 4x100m C Division boys relay record at the 57th National Schools Track and Field Championships, snatching gold in 44.52 seconds.
The previous electronically-timed record for the event was 44.93s, clocked by the 2007 SSP relay team. More than 0.4s was shaved off the 9-year record as SSP came away with the gold medal.
Hwa Chong Institution (HCI) came in second with a time of 47s flat, while Anglo-Chinese School (Independent) (ACSI) completed the podium standings, finishing in 47.11s. After coming in sixth in the semi-finals of the event, and clocking 49.09, ACS(I) was the surprise package in the race.
This race represented a vast improvement from last year’s results. In 2015, the winning time clocked by Victoria School was 47.41s. St. Joseph’s Institution, who finished fourth this year, clocked 47.44, only 0.03s slower than last year’s gold-medal time.
The race began with ACS(I) marginally ahead. However, SSP first runner Chin Yi Yang soon hit his stride and he was ahead by the time the baton was passed to the second runner. The SSP lead was maintained throughout the straight stretch by Lucas Lim.
SSP’s third runner, Mohd Haziq, extended the lead coming round the bend, with HCI and ACS(I) more than 10m behind. SSP’s last runner, Reuben Lee, powered through the home stretch to finish almost two and a half seconds ahead of the rest of the competitors.
After the race, Reuben Lee commented, “The race was fantastic and everyone did their part to push and give it all we got. This was a new team, and our strategy was just to whack! We will try our best to break the B Division record next year when we enter the B Division.”
