National Stadium, Friday, April 29, 2016 — A total of four championship records were broken on the final day of the 57th National Schools Track and Field Championships.
Joshua Chua of Raffles Institution (RI) was first to tear up the Mondo track in front of 13,000 spectators at the National Stadium, setting an incredible new record of 10.87 seconds (–0.1m/s wind speed) in the B Division boys’ 100 metres final. He finished ahead of David Tameeris (11.13s) of Anglo-Chinese School (Independent) (ACS(I)) and Marcell Tan (11.17s) of Singapore Sports School (SSP).
Joshua’s winning timing went under the previous electronically-timed championship mark of 10.90s, set by SSP alumnus Shahrir Mohd Anuar in 2009.
SSP then went on to break three records on the same day, starting with the C Division boys’ 4x100m relay, followed by both the C and B Division boys’ 4x400m relay.
SSP’s C Division 4x100m relay boys ran a 44.52s, breaking the old 44.93s mark set by their seniors nine years ago.
SSP’s C Division 4x400m relay boys then clocked 3:35.17, going under the previous 3:37.25 record set by ACS(I) in 2008. Following that, their B Division seniors won in 3:26.16, beating the old mark of 3:26.55, held by RI since 2003.
