Hougang Sports Hall, Wednesday, May 11, 2016 – Meridian Junior College (MJC) are one step closer to the semi-finals after a 4-2 victory over Victoria Junior College (VJC) in the National A Division Floorball Championship.

Thaddeus Tan (MJC #77) scored a game-high three goals while Muhammad Haziq (#23) and Koh Dun Xian (#5) from VJC scored a goal each.

The rivalry between both teams was apparent as they started aggressively. MJC had faster team plays and managed to set themselves up for a few shots. However, they were unable to finish well and most of the shots were saved by the VJC keeper.

With 5 minutes left on the clock, a VJC player got called out for a 2-minute penalty. Despite having four players left on the court, VJC showed impressive defence and prevented MJC from taking any shots. The first period ended 0-0.

MJC started the second period with a Brandon Ong (#26) goal. From then, they took multiple shots and soon scored their second goal with a point blank shot from Thaddeus Tan (#77).

VJC did not back down as Muhammad Haziq (#23) received a pass from Wong Ee Chann (#30) behind goal and scored their first point.

VJC were determined to equalise and took many shots but were shut down by the MJC defense.

The rest of the period was a fast paced one as players sprinted for every ball in hopes of scoring a goal. A chance for VJC came when they were given a free hit from the corner. With a quick pass and shoot, Koh Dun Xian (VJC #5) fired the ball past the MJC defenders and keeper to end the period 2-2.

In the third period, an MJC player was given a two-minute penalty for slashing. Despite being a player down, MJC defied the odds as Thaddeus Tan (#77) scored yet another goal to take the 3-2 lead.

Two goals was not enough for Thaddeus Tan (#77) as he unleashed a turn drag shot in the next play, extending the lead to 4-2.

VJC upped their offense in the remaining minutes and pressured MJC with multiple shot attempts. The MJC defenders fought hard to block every shot to keep their two-goal lead. The game ended with a 4-2 MJC victory, placing them at the top of their group.

VJC will go up against National Junior College to fight for the semi-final spot on Monday, May 16. MJC are guaranteed a spot in the semis and next face River Valley High School on Wednesday, May 18.
