Hougang Sports Hall, Wednesday, May 11, 2016 – Victoria Junior College (VJC) triumphed 5-3 over Tampines Junior College (TPJC) in the National A Division Girls Floorball Championship.
With the win, VJC secured a spot in the semi-finals while this was the last game for TPJC as they failed to qualify for the semis.
Audrey Tey (#9), Nurhidayah Rahmat (#12), Jeslyn Peh (#19), Ayesha Saadiqah (#10) and Carissa Ng (#14) contributed to the VJC win with a goal apiece.
VJC made fast passes to open space to counter the TPJC defense and create opportunities to shoot. Five minutes into the game, Nurhidayah Rahmat (#12) from VJC found her way to the slot area and fired a point blank wrist shot to score the first goal.
TPJC were determined not to let any other shots pass their defence and followed their opponents closely, blocking every shot. Both teams went back and forth but could not score for the rest of the period.
Early into the second period, Audrey Tey (#9) from VJC scored a goal to extend the lead to 2-0. With their aggressive double team defence, VJC made it hard for TPJC to attack and forced them to make mistakes. However, in the last few minutes, Victoria Leng (#14) from TPJC found her way past the VJC defence and scored a goal to reduce the deficit to 1-2.
VJC started strong in the third period as Jeslyn Peh (#19) fired a shot to gain a two-point, 3-1 lead. Soon after, TPJC replied with a goal of their own to narrow the gap yet again.
Both keepers Avani Jain (TPJC #11) and Yu Xinyao (VJC #15) were instrumental in defence and saved many shots.
In a quick change of possession, Charmaine Neo (#10) from TPJC raced from mid court towards the goal and scored the equalising shot, igniting cheers from the bench. The celebration was short lived as VJC Ayesha Saadiqah (#10) took back the lead in the next minute from a free hit.
VJC then extended their lead to 5-3 when Carissa Ng (VJC #14) received a pass from Ayesha Saadiqah (#10) to score a blindside shot. The rest of the game saw TPJC fall behind as they were slow to transition from offense to defence. VJC continued to pressure TPJC with their fast paced plays and tight defence and ended the game 5-3 winners.
Ayesha Saadiqah (#10), captain of VJC, said, “I think that the first period we were a bit scared. We picked it up during the last period and we wanted to make sure that we ended off the group stage with a bang!”
Lee Li Xuan (#29), co-captain of VJC, added, “We are very happy to have made it to the top four. The game is going to get tougher from now on and it is not going to get easier so the team should not be complacent and should work harder for the remaining matches.”

Hi! (VJC #19), photo 6, is Jeslyn Peh, not Natalie Tan!! 🙂
Thank you for pointing out the error. The caption has been corrected accordingly. 🙂
HI! VJC’s 4th and 5th goal were by #10 and #14 respectively. not #9 and #11. 4th goal was during a free hit assisted by #21. 5th goal was a blindside shot assisted by #10.
thanks!
