MOE (Evans Road), Monday, July 11, 2016 — Queensway Secondary (QS) defeated Whitley Secondary (WS) 53-35 in the South Zone C Division Basketball Championship.

The win meant Queensway finished Round 1 with a 2-1 win-loss record and a spot in Round 2 after finishing second in Group D. Queensway’s sole loss came in a 46-50 reverse against Peirce Secondary who topped the group with a 3-0 record.

For Whitley, the loss dropped them to 1-2 and out of the running for Round 2.

Jordan Tan (QS #23) had a team-high 13 points while teammate Michael Yeo (#0) added 10. Benedict had a team-high 13 points for Whitley.

Leading 13-12 heading into the second quarter, Queensway started the second quarter with an 8-0 run in the first five minutes to pull away to 21-12.

Chek Wee (WS #6) finally scored for Whitley with four minutes to go and his teammates Benedict (WS #4) added four more points but Queensway were dominant, with Michael Yeo (QS #0) making his presence felt with constant drives into the paint to lay up.

Leading 29-18 at half time, Queensway’s scoring dried up in the third, with Jordan Tan (QS #23) scoring the only basket for the first five minutes to maintain a 10-point lead.

Benedict (WS #4) was a constant menace with his drives into the paint but the reintroduction of Michael Yeo (QS #0) helped Queensway to get going again. Michael capped had an and-1 to make it 34-23.

A nice pass from Luis (WS #9) saw Benedict (WS #4) score to reduce the deficit to 10 points again but Queensway added another two to finally edge the quarter 8-7 and head by 12 (37-25) heading into the fourth.

Queensway had a quick 5-0 run, including a Michael Yeo (#0) 3-pointer, within a minute of the restart before Starges (WS #12) Starges scored to give his side a boost.

At the half way mark of the fourth quarter, Queensway led 47-31. (QS #27) made it a 20-point, 51-31 game with two minutes left to end any hope of a Whitley comeback.
