ITE College West, Thursday, October 27, 2016 — Republic Polytechnic (RP) beat defending champions Temasek Polytechnic (TP) 59-45 on Day 2 of the Polytechnic-Institute of Technical Education (POL-ITE) Men’s Basketball Championship.

In the first game of the day, Ngee Ann Polytechnic (NP) beat Singapore Polytechnic (SP) 49-42.

Institute of Technical Education (ITE) beat Nanyang Polytechnic (NYP) 65-63 in a later game, leaving ITE and RP as the only two teams with perfect 2-0 win-loss records after Day 2.

TP and NP both have 1-1 records while Singapore Polytechnic (SP) and NYP are 0-2.

The match up between SP and NP saw them good use of their strong inside game against each other. However, it was NP who were able to hold the lead throughout the whole game and make many blocks throughout.

In the second half, SP narrowed the deficit from 14 points to seven but could not stop NP from winning 49-42.

The biggest crowd of the night showed up to watch potential champions RP go up against defending champions TP. The atmosphere was intense as both teams had good shooters and guards.

TP started out with a dominating 7-0 run until Marco Kok (RP #20) scored two back-to-back three-pointers to narrow the gap to one point.

However, it was Zoel Lee (RP #7) who stood out with five 3-pointers in the game. He made three of those 3-pointers consecutively, and two of them were contested when he shot from a position slightly further than the 3-point line. He was fouled for one of his attempts and he made all three free throws as well.

On the other hand, it was Chaw Ji Keong (TP #8) who stood out with his spin moves and finishing with a finger roll to the rim. He also managed to wow the crowd with his handling skills.

The conclusion was uncertain as both teams kept taking the lead but RP were able to widen the gap in the final quarter to win 59-45.

The final game between ITE and NYP saw equally matched teams with good shooters. The teams almost went into an overtime, but ITE were able to hold off NYP to win by just two points (65-63).

NYP next play NP, TP will go up against SP, and RP will face ITE. The first game starts at 6pm, on Monday, October 31, at ITE College West.
