Serangoon Garden Secondary School, Thursday, February 9, 2017 — Fairfield Methodist School (Secondary) (FMS) showed their attacking prowess with a convincing 3-0 victory over Beatty Secondary School (BTY) in Group A of the South Zone C Division Football Championship.
An early goal by Akmal Daniel (#12) and two late goals from Fairfield captain for the day Elson Chan (#11) helped the team seal their first three points of the season.
But despite the strong result, Fairfield coach Mr Lionel Chan is under no illusions of the task that lies ahead.
“I think there is still a lot of room for improvement,” said Mr Chan.
“Their awareness is still not very good, just being aware of where their different teammates are, I think we left a lot of gaps.”
But the 51-year-old coach still praised his charges for the match saying that he “cannot complain” about the performance of Elson Chan.
“He is one of the more consistent guys,” Mr Chan said.
Elson Chan’s brace against Beatty Secondary School came late in the game during a span of seven minutes.
In the 54th minute, a FMS corner from the left was punched away by Beatty’s Darpan Gurung (#20) but it reached only as far as Elson who headed it back towards the near post, looping over all the defenders and into the goal.
Beatty tried to reply through Daniel Pun (#9), who caused some trouble down the left, but ultimately could not overcome Fairfield’s defence line.
Seven minutes later, Om Apurva (#10) broke down the right wing and sent a floater into the centre of the box for Elson to glance it into the back of the net with virtually the last touch of the game.
With three games into the season, Beatty’s captain Anson Zhong is not throwing in the towel yet and still sees room for improvement.
“Even though we lost, we put in our best efforts already,” said the 13-year-old.
“Our teamwork and communication has to be improved, we don’t really talk a lot on the field,” he added.
“We can always do better.”
In the next round of matches on February 14, 2017, Fairfield will play against NorthLight School while Beatty will play their final Group A match against NorthLight School as well on Thursday, February 16, 2017.

Om is the captain of FMS.
Hi there,
Elson was the captain for the match and after talking to Fairfield’s coach Mr Lionel Chan, I have found out that apparently, the two share the armband between themselves for different games. So I have changed it to “captain for the day” in the story. Thanks for your feedback!
